How much does the carnivore diet cost?

Roughly $50 to $150 a week, depending mostly on which meats you choose. Here are four real weekly plans priced with current U.S. averages.

Four real carnivore weeks

We ran our meal planner four times: 7 days, 3 meals a day, U.S. national average prices (August 2026). Each plan is built to its own daily calorie and protein target.

PlanCalories / dayProtein / dayPer weekPer day
Tight budget, smaller appetite1,600104 g$46.16$6.59
Tight budget, bigger appetite2,150141 g$62.04$8.86
More variety2,550128 g$89.78$12.83
Steak and seafood2,550128 g$138.91$19.84

21 meals each, U.S. national average prices (August 2026), quantities rounded up to supermarket pack sizes.

The budget weeks lean on chicken legs, pork chops, eggs, bacon and a little liver. The $138.91 week swaps part of that for ribeye, seafood and more beef. Similar amount of food, roughly double the price.

What makes carnivore cheap or expensive

  • Your cuts. By far the biggest factor. Chicken legs cost $1.67/lb; ribeye costs $19.38/lb.
  • How much you eat. A smaller, lighter person may need 1,600 calories a day, a tall active man 2,500 or more.
  • Where you live. Ground beef averages $6.41/lb in the South and $7.44/lb in the West.
  • Waste. Meat that goes bad before you cook it is the most expensive meat there is. Plan first, then shop.
  • Dairy and extras. Butter, cheese and cream add up quickly if you use a lot of them.

Is carnivore more expensive than a normal diet?

It depends on what you buy now. Meat costs more per pound than rice or pasta, but many people on carnivore also stop buying snacks, sweets, drinks and takeout, which offsets part of the difference. Built around eggs, chicken, pork and ground beef, carnivore is manageable on a normal grocery budget.

How we calculated this

  • Prices: U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics average retail prices (August 2026) where BLS tracks the item; ribeye is derived from the BLS steak price; everything else is our estimate of a typical supermarket shelf price.
  • Quantities come from our meal planner and are rounded up to the pack sizes you buy, so the totals include some leftovers for the next week.
  • Salt, coffee and other pantry items are not included.
